Difference Between 65Mn and Stainless Steel ER Collets

1. Material Characteristics

After heat treatment, 65Mn spring steel features excellent elasticity, fatigue resistance and deformation resistance, making it the preferred material for precision clamping. Stainless steel delivers outstanding rust and corrosion resistance but suffers from poor elasticity and rebound performance, failing to meet high-precision clamping requirements.

2. Core Performance Differences

Precision: 65Mn collets achieve a concentricity of 0.005–0.008 mm with long-term stable processing precision. Stainless steel collets have a concentricity of above 0.01 mm, prone to deformation and rapid precision attenuation.

Durability: 65Mn collets are wear-resistant and sturdy, suitable for continuous mass production with a long service life. Stainless steel is relatively soft, easy to wear and loosen under high-frequency operation, resulting in high loss.

3. Application Scenarios

Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel collets adapt to harsh working conditions with high humidity, water cooling, acid and alkali corrosion. As carbon steel, 65Mn collets are rust-prone and require daily protection and maintenance.

4. Selection Summary

65Mn collets are widely used in CNC machines, milling machines and engraving machines for precision milling, mold processing and mass finishing with high cost performance. Stainless steel collets are only applied in harsh environments, merely suitable for medium-precision operations such as rough machining and ordinary drilling.


General industry selection criteria: Choose 65Mn spring steel ER collets for conventional precision machining, and stainless steel ER collets for special working conditions with high humidity and corrosion. Proper selection improves processing quality and reduces costs.
