Bull Nose Center

Umbrella-type centers, also commonly called bull nose centers in foreign trade, are special tailstock supporting toolings for lathes, CNC lathes and cylindrical grinders. Different from conventional 60° pointed carbide centers, they feature a large-diameter umbrella-shaped frustum head (mushroom head profile). Positioned by fitting the workpiece’s inner bore or end face through the wide conical surface, they are specially designed to solve the supporting problems of workpieces without center holes, large-bore pipes, sleeves, flanges and thin-walled parts.

All shanks adopt standard Morse tapers MT2/MT3/MT4/MT5/MT6, which can be directly matched with machine tool tailstocks.

1. Large contact area with evenly distributed force to avoid deformation

The wide umbrella-shaped cone surface fits closely with the inner hole or end face of workpieces, dispersing pressure evenly. It prevents collapse and indentation on aluminum, copper tubes and thin-walled stainless steel parts, and delivers excellent vibration damping during heavy cutting.

2.No center hole required, simplifying machining procedures

Hollow pipes, flanges and disc finished parts do not need pre-drilled center holes, eliminating drilling and hole finishing processes, shortening clamping and machining time without damaging the original end surface precision of finished workpieces.

3.Automatic centering for stable and reliable coaxial accuracy

The wide cone surface provides powerful self-centering performance and avoids eccentricity during clamping, delivering superior roundness and end face perpendicularity after machining. Precision models run out within 0.002 mm.

4.Wide compatibility for large-bore hollow workpieces

Available in a full range of umbrella head sizes, it supports large-bore cylinder liners, oil pipes and large flanges, which cannot be supported by standard pointed centers.

5.High rigidity for stable heavy-duty machining

The integral frustum structure boasts higher strength than pointed centers. It resists deflection and tool deflection when turning or grinding large heavy workpieces, improving processing stability and dimensional consistency of finished products.
